Hurricane Dorian – K1 DIRECT: Bahamas Relief Update 1
Yesterday the team took turns to assist with data management at a private airport in Nassau. Here our tasks included registering evacuees that came off of private charters, commercial evacuation flights and ferries. K1 DIRECT assisted with inputting the evacuees information such as passport, DOB, and contact details into laptops.
This was done entirely by private entities and non-profit organizations, that felt there was a need to collect data from evacuees coming in. Hundreds of people came in a day, and there was a lot of mix emotions, as the team greeted each person who came off the plane, and assisted with managing persons and their enquiries, including directing them to receive more information on shelters and temporary housing.
We heard their stories, offered our support, including psycho-social, leant a smile and assisted in the best way we could.
K1 DIRECT Management also spent the day in meetings and discussions with various UN organizations, aid organizations, and military to get a clearer picture of the needs and situation on ground and where K1 DIRECT could most effectively play its role. Based on this, we made a plan for set up teams, tasks and locations for the coming week.
