Hurricane Dorian – K1 DIRECT: Bahamas Relief Update 2
During Day 2 in the Bahamas, after partner meetings, K1 DIRECT found the most effective way to assist would be to split the teams into two groups, where half would go to Freeport and the other half would stay in Nassau.
In Nassau, tasks identified were to continue to assist with data collection, registration of and providing psychosocial support and other assistance for evacuees coming in from Freeport and Abaco. Private charter planes and commercials planes will continue to fly persons into Nassau for refuge.
As the shelters are becoming overcapacity, also identified was the need to set up new shelters. K1 has been working with EOC partners such as UN agencies, international orgs (such as ShelterBox USA, UKAid, and Rotary) to figure out avenues to provide shelter. The next step is to identify locations that would be suited best.
The team has managed to get into Freeport on a relief plane from Bahamas Air. Grand Bahama was one of the islands that were badly hit. K1 DIRECT is working with community leaders to assess the needs on the island and will begin it’s on-ground relief assistance activities tomorrow.
Thank you to Rev of the St. Michael’s Methodist Church, for allowing the team to set up base in Nassau, as well as Parliamentarian Iram Lewis for facilitating the team to set up base in Freeport via Pastor Russel of the St. Stephens Anglican Church.
