Hurricane Dorian – K1 DIRECT: Bahamas Relief Update 6

Update:

The 6th day has arrived in the Bahamas, and after conversations with Senator Smith & ESF7, the team in Freeport (NEMA-Bahamas) changed the distribution structure to target the hardest hit neighbourhoods on the island, who have not received much supplies.

The K1 DIRECT team in Freeport, Grand Bahama worked in an assembly system where they made packages for households of 4-6 persons, for 4 days, complete with food, water and hygiene products. Approximately 500 packages went into 5 neighbourhoods. The team worked with International Medical Corps, who distributed first aid kits, Team Rubicon UK and Team Rubicon USA for about 10 hours that day. We were also assisted by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force Reserves.

During the day, we also did an interview with Senator Smith, which aired on ZNS News.com (The Official Page), the national television in the Bahamas to encourage persons in need that help is coming. It was a long day, but ended in super high spirits of what we accomplished together.

K1 DIRECT in Nassau visited four properties with persons of Bahamas Resolve Limited to continue to assess which properties would be best suited for shelters. The team visited old hotels and inns, which deemed to be great options for short to long term accommodation. The process including a comprehensive list of details of the buildings such as – accessibility for persons who are disabled, size of rooms, materials built with, number of toilets etc – so that relevant persons are able to assist with renovations.

It’s been heart warming to witness the many persons of the Bahamas who are so kind, and open with helping us, to give back to the community. Our work wouldn’t be possible without the collaboration and assistance of others.
